Near East is a contested term that stems from 19th century Western views. In the text it will refer to countries: Bahrain, Egypt, Iran, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman, the Palestinian Authority and Gaza Strip, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Syria, Turkey and Yemen. All these countries have a particular history, but over the past century they have been united by the common experience of British and French colonialism, post-colonial development, American hegemony and, more recently, the orientation of some countries towards Russia and China. The region is currently engulfed by the escalation of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Iran is heavily involved in the conflict and is leading the anti-Israeli axis of resistance, which is expanding the conflict territorially and could escalate into a regional war.

Keywords: Near East, Near East states, non-state actors in terrorism, the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Iranian anti-Israeli axis of resistance, the threat of regional war.
