Providing healthcare in prison facilities represents a complex challenge with significant implications not only for inmates but also for the broader society, including regional development and social inclusion. Healthcare in prisons is ensured by the medical centres and hospitals of the Czech Prison Service; however, when specific needs exceed the capacity of these facilities, care is provided by external healthcare providers. Insufficient access to preventive and curative services within the prison system can negatively impact recidivism rates and pose a risk to public health and safety. Quality healthcare in prisons supports not only the health of inmates but also their successful reintegration into society upon release, which can significantly reduce costs associated with social and healthcare services. Cooperation between the prison system and regional institutions is essential in fostering inclusion and stability within the regions.
