Terénní klíč k denním motýlům a vřetenuškám ČR

Zdeněk Laštůvka, Tomáš Kadlec, Michal Knapp

Butterflies (Papilionoidea) and burnets (Zygaena spp.) serve as good indicators for biodiversity conservation. The presence of particular species allows us to effectively assess the biological quality of a given site, and long-term monitoring of populations can show whether our efforts to support biodiversity (e.g., through targeted management interventions) are successful. The introductory parts of this field guide include information on the threats to the butterflies and burnets of Czechia, the ways how the general public can contribute to their research, and the specific guidance on their monitoring. There are 168 species of butterflies and 15 species of burnets registered in Czechia, and this publication presents identification characters for 131 butterfly species and all species of burnets. The keys to the butterflies do not include species that are extinct, recorded only individually in the past, or poorly documented in Czechia. A few rare species not usually encountered by naturalists and amateur entomologists are mentioned in the notes to their more common relatives. Brief information on habitat requirements, caterpillar host-plants, and phenology is added for each species. In addition to the texts, the publication has a rich pictorial documentation illustrating the identification characters on the photographed specimens.
