HISTORIC URBAN PARKS AS BIODIVERSITY REFUGEES IN CULTURAL LANDSCAPES

Large urban parks in European cultural landscapes are well-known as habitats with high local bird diversity. In this study, we have studied the bird community in historic urban park in Olomouc heritage city (Czech Republic) using bird territory mapping in 2005 and 2008 years. Results revealed the bird community in historic urban park was very rich in abundance and species diversity in investigated period. These results supported emerging idea that large historic parks can be considered as important refugees for bird diversity in cultural landscapes. Implications of results for sustainable management of urban green environment (especially in the frame of maintaining the very large old trees providing heterogeneity of nest habitats) are discussed.
