The prevalence of overweight and obesity is increasing globally in both the adult population and in children and adolescents, with potentially serious health consequences. One of the key factors in preventing overweight is adequate food intake. The aim of this study is to evaluate the determinants of eating behaviour in children and adolescents, particularly the aspects of dietary restriction, emotional eating and the effects of external factors. To measure these aspects, the DEBQ-C (Dutch Eating Behaviour Questionnaire for Children) was used, which contains 21 questions evaluated with a five-point scale: ‚never‘, ‚rarely‘, ‚sometimes‘, ‚often‘ and ‚very often‘. Data were analysed by use of descriptive statistics and comparative methods. The research sample consisted of 98 participants aged 11–17 years, including 53 children (23 boys and 30 girls) from the Children's Hospital in Kretin (experimental group with obesity or overweight) and 45 children (20 boys and 25 girls) from the Children's Hospital in Ostrov u Macocha (control group with normal weight). Overweight and obese children showed a prevalence of dietary restriction, higher sensitivity to negative éemotions (sadness, worry, upset) and craving for food in the presence of external stimuli such as eating by others or walking past fast food restaurants. The results suggest that interventions aimed at improving eating habits should include not only promoting healthy eating but also developing emotional regulation and coping with external stimuli.
