Forest easements have become an indispensable legal institution in the history of forestry, which was part of the long-term process of transition from subsistence forest use to modern forest management. The article deals with forest easements and their reflection in forest law, which are long-established in the legal history of the Czech lands. It is a legal institution where a person is entitled to use a forest even though he is not its owner. Forest easements should contribute to the rational use of the forest, where the owner of the forest is not obliged to manage the forest, but its user has the right of use and enjoyment. That is, the right to use someone else's property and benefit from its fruits. The legal institution of forest easements was created at the turn of the 13th and 14th centuries in response to the demand for timber, building material for the development of towns and the construction of dwellings. Over time, forest laws established obligations and rights between the forest owner and the beneficiary of a forest easement (e.g. the right to cut down trees or to graze livestock). In the course of the 19th century, forest easements were no longer suitable for forest owners because of the property losses incurred and the easements were being exempted. The administrative authorities then set a remuneration for the forest easement. At present, it would be possible to return to the institution of forest easements in the form of an amendment to the Civil Code, albeit in a limited form, as this article indicates. The reasons lie in the protection of the forest and the economic exploitation of the forest land by its owners and co-owners or tenants.

DOI: 10.11118/978-80-7701-010-8-0037

The aim of the study was to present the variability of the investment of a selected company in wood processing industry (WPI) and to point out the possibility of variability in the event of a correction in one or several input parameters of the investment with an impact into the selected indicators as decision criteria. The variability of the investment was determined in the study by observing the ceteris paribus condition with correction of the expected or required rate of return. The study analyses the same or opposite changes in indicators with an impact on the growth of the company's wealth (given by the net present value) and the accepted level of risk (given by the internal rate of return). The results present how the discount rate will affect the absolute and ratio indicators based on discounted cash flows and the overall economic efficiency of the investment in selected company in the WPI industry.

Family businesses play a key role in the global economy, serving as one of the main drivers of economic growth and employment. Their specific nature and approach to financial decision-making set them apart from non-family firms. This paper focuses on identifying the main forms of financing for family businesses in the wood-processing industry in Slovakia. The introduction emphasizes the importance of the business environment and highlights that family firms often consider not only economic factors but also emotional and cultural aspects when making financial decisions. The study analyzes various factors that influence the financial decisions of family firms, including their preference for internal capital and their cautious approach to risk. The methodology of this study combines secondary source analysis with primary research conducted through questionnaires. The research involved 491 companies, 392 of which were family firms in the wood-processing sector in Slovakia. The results showed that family businesses prefer internal financing, with only a smaller number utilizing external sources, and some combining both forms of financing. Working capital loans were not used as extensively as initially expected. Recommendations for future research include a deeper analysis of the reasons why family firms favor internal financing and how they could better utilize external sources.

Activities in the field of innovation are a basic prerequisite for the success of the company for sustainable development within the market economy. These activities are an important dynamic factor in every sector of society and at the same time create an important link between the present and the future development of a given sector. The central idea of the current direction of innovation management is the orientation towards the development of the knowledge-based economy and sustainability, not excluding the wood processing industry. The wood processing industry is understood as a industry related to forestry, as a chain of production processes - industrial wood processing and production of a wide range of wood products in connection with harvesting and transport of wood. The sectors of the wood-processing industry classified according to SK NACE are wood processing and production of wood and cork products except furniture, production of paper and paper products and production of furniture. The total innovative activity of the woodworking industry, in terms of wood processing, is 36.82 %, for paper and paper products production is 61.88 %, and for furniture is 47.62 %. Despite the growing innovative activity of the wood-processing industry, according to the revised OECD/Eurostat classification, which takes into account the intensity of research and development in individual sectors of the processing industry and services, rather than the characteristics of products and their innovations, the wood-processing industry in Slovakia is classified as "Low-tech", i.e. an industry with a low level of introduction of innovations and innovative technologies. The most frequent barriers to the innovation activity of enterprises in Slovakia or limitations in innovative activity were identified as too high costs of innovation (up to 27.2 %), lack of financial resources for innovation activities within the company, difficulties in obtaining state subsidies or grants, lack of qualified employees within the company, too high competition on the market etc. Based on several findings, it is expected that innovations in the woodprocessing industry in Slovakia will be oriented in a large extent...

The objective of this study is to analyze the significance of the value chain of game meat production for forest management using the cases of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Game meat, as an important natural resource, plays a key role in the conservation and management of forest ecosystems, with each stage of game meat production (primary production, processing, distribution) contributing to the added value of the final product. The study explores the differences between the two countries in terms of hunting activities, wildlife density, and economic factors affecting game meat production. The results indicate opportunities for increasing economic benefits and improving environmental management of forests through more efficient utilization of game resources.

The Czech Republic (CR) is a country with extensive forest cover, advanced forest management, and significant production potential. The Czech wood processing industry also benefits from a strong tradition and a sufficient, sustainably renewable domestic raw material base. The total annual timber harvest in CR, under normal conditions, consistently amounts to around 16 million cubic meters, with nearly 90 % consisting of coniferous wood, primarily sawlogs. The key players in the production and processing chain in CR, also known as the forestry-wood processing sector, are forest owners, forestry companies, and timber processors. There is clear interdependence between these sectors, and the economic viability of sustainable forest management largely depends on the timber production function of forest ecosystems and subsequent wood processing. This paper focuses on selected companies representing the aforementioned production and processing chain and analyzes the formation, structure, and allocation of generated capital. The analysis is based on publicly accessible sources, primarily in accordance with Act No. 304/2013 Coll., on Public Registers of Legal Entities and Individuals.

This paper examines the policy frameworks and governance structures that underpin sustainable forestry practices in the Czech Republic and Nigeria, highlighting how different environmental, economic, and social contexts influence forest management strategies in each country. By employing a comparative analysis, this study reveals the effectiveness of various policy instruments and governance mechanisms in promoting sustainable forestry. In the Czech Republic, a strong emphasis on legislation and community involvement has fostered a well-regulated forestry sector characterized by high levels of compliance and public participation. This approach is supported by an extensive network of protected areas, advanced silvicultural techniques, and robust enforcement of environmental regulations. Conversely, Nigeria faces significant challenges due to less stringent regulatory frameworks, enforcement issues, and socio-economic constraints. Despite these challenges, Nigeria has made progress through community-based management initiatives and international cooperation, aimed at enhancing forest governance and promoting local stewardship of forest resources. The paper underscores the importance of adaptive management strategies, stakeholder engagement, and the integration of traditional knowledge into formal forestry policies. Recommendations are offered to strengthen forest governance in both nations, emphasizing the need for policy coherence, capacity building, and the adoption of best practices tailored to local conditions. By analyzing these disparate approaches, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of the dynamics influencing sustainable forest management and offers insights that can inform policy development and implementation in diverse global contexts.
